about DER DESIGNS

For as long as I can remember, I have had a burning interest in both the natural world and the visual arts. My mother was an accomplished painter and art teacher who nurtured my creative side from an early age. Throughout my childhood I cultivated that creativity and explored various artistic outlets. In high school and later in college, I was drawn to the studio arts, particularly photography, where I developed a critical eye and a passion for design.

After graduating from the College of Santa Fe NM, I found work in a cabinet shop where I spent several years learning machine skills and efficient production techniques. In 1998 I sought out an apprenticeship through the Baulines Crafts Guild. I spent the following year working with master craftsman, and nationally recognized educator, David J. Marks. In David's shop, I soaked up as much knowledge as I could and learned to take risks in my work. By the end of the year, I realized I had only scratched the surface of the woodworking craft. I left inspired and eager to pursue a budding career.

This professional journey has occurred alongside a life committed to the outdoors. I have always found solace deep in the forest, on rivers, and at sea. My greatest inspiration is drawn directly from our relationships with these places. With my work I hope to evoke reverence for the natural world in our everyday lives.

Today, from a modest shop, I continue the tradition of building fine furniture. No warehouse and no production lines. Just quality woodwork built from the hands and heart of its maker, one piece at a time.
